Turid’s Journey, 2 years later
My new way of life
It has been two years since I initially started my 22kg weight loss journey and I have managed to successfully keep my weight off. I no longer call it a diet or eating plan, it’s now my way of life.
I do have to admit that I gained 2 kg’s over the Christmas period and was not happy about that but Christmas is a time for celebration and a little bit of overindulgence here and there is perfectly normal. I knew that I had to get rid of that extra weight and so I decided to re-look at the photos of myself when I was overweight and relive my journey. This helped me to remember what it felt like to be at my heaviest and within 2 weeks, I managed to lose the extra 2kgs that I had put on.
I have learnt a great deal about myself throughout the journey. I have gained a good understanding of my body and what I can and cannot eat and also what my body stores. I regularly do body scans with the ALT-X Rapid Health Stress Scanner, which gives me a ‘snapshot’ picture of my overall health status and the results are displayed immediately. I am pleased to say that my body and health has never been better! On a monthly basis, I get vitamin booster drips and lymphatic drainage treatments to boost my lymphatic system. These treatments keep my body healthy by detoxifying and removing extra waste and toxins.
I don’t want to obsess over my weight and treatments, but I do need to keep a check on myself. I dread the thought of stepping on the scale regularly too, but I use that to measure my progress and it definitely helps to keep me motivated.
I have not been ill once
Not even as much as a slight sniffle! I never thought I would be saying this, but I am actually loving my gym and have really taken to running.
My personal trainer, Alex, from Beacon Fitness has been an incredible inspiration and has been beside me, continually encouraging me throughout the journey. This year Alex and I set my goals; he is certainly pushing me out of my comfort Zone. He has pushed me to start participating in some races, and has even encouraged me to look at doing trail races. I was really very apprehensive as I have never done a running race before, let alone a trail race! So, I completed my first 7.5km trail race at Teak Estate at the end of January and have recently just completed my second trail race held at the Lion and Safari Park! I am now completely hooked and constantly look forward to being out in the beautiful countryside with fresh air with fellow friendly and encouraging runners.
I have recently discovered a couple of exciting night races too and am looking forward to participating in them. So thank you, Alex, for always believing in me and for taking me out of my comfort zone.
TEE’S TIPS
I always eat off of a side plate at home. If I go out for dinner, I will never have a three-course meal. I have learnt to say no and if I feel the slightest bit full, I will put my knife and fork down and rather get my food to go. I love my veggies and salad and I feel awful if I eat carbs, so I stay away from them. Yes, sometimes I do feel like some pizza so I will have it, but I can have no more than 2 slices and then I feel full.
Throughout my journey there has been one thing that has continually bothered me, and that is the excess sagging skin that I now have, especially around my face and neck, even after exercising. I did not want to get surgery to remove the excess skin as I cannot afford to have any down time so I decided that this was the perfect time to restart with the skin tightening and body contouring treatments. I was also bothered by the little pockets of fat and cellulite that I still had and was battling to get rid of and so I started new treatments with the BTL Exilis Elite machine and have seen great results so far!
I believe that weight loss is just as much a mental journey than it is a physical one. It is very important to acknowledge your own mindset and be able to deal with and face up to the negative mindset that is holding you back. I signed up to the Shifft program in order to understand myself better and gain a better relationship with my health and my daily lifestyle. Take a look at how this helped me on my weight-loss journey below.
Just Start
My number one piece of advice to start is to just start! It is as simple as that. Just start somewhere; it doesn’t matter where, just start!
Never Give Up On Yourself
Not giving up on myself was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My second time around, I learned to be more compassionate with myself, especially in the beginning. I constantly told myself that if it were easy, everyone would be doing it. I needed to be patient, because change doesn’t happen overnight. I would remind myself of what I felt like at my heaviest weight and how I promised myself I would never be there again—I would never give up on myself again, and I suggest you do the same!
I turn 57 in April this year and for me that is just a number. I wake up every morning and cannot wait to start my day, it feels amazing and I am always full of energy and excitement. I am happy with myself; I feel I can now cope with so much more and believe that you can do that too!
